In the manufacturing industry, welding is an all-time high-in-demand skill, but conventional training is costly, time-consuming, and hazardous. There is a need for a more accessible, engaging, and effective way to teach welding skills to students.
Impact
VR welding simulation can provide a realistic and immersive learning environment that mimics real-world welding scenarios. It can reduce the material, time, and infrastructure costs of training, as well as the health and safety risks for the students. Additionally, it increases the motivation, confidence, and performance of students on welding tasks.
Outcome
We made an easy-to-use system that helps students learn how to weld using VR. It shows them what to do and how to do it with pictures and touch feedback. We tested our system with 24 beginners and found out that they learned better with VR than with videos. They could also do better in real welding situations after using VR.
ROI
The VR welding simulation project can potentially save up to 68% of the training costs and 50% of the training time compared to conventional methods. It can also increase the quality and quantity of the welding workforce by attracting more students to enroll in welding courses and improving their retention and graduation rates.
